Default Where's all the gold coming from?

Ok, maybe a stupid question, but I gotta ask.

I've been playing GW for about 2 months now roughly. I only own Prophicies. I have one main char I play (an E/Ne), and I play roughly 3 hours a day, more on weekends, so my char is Level 20 and I've ascended.

Still, cash eludes me a great deal. At any given time I only have 5,000-10,000 gold pieces. I pick up every single item that drops, and identify/salvage all of it, then sell it en-masse. The only purchases I make are for armor (being an E, my armor sucks, and it's worth it to get any extra I can) and identity/salvage kits. I almost never have to buy materials since I salvage everything.

Still, my gold is always lacking. I see people in the forums all the time saying stuff like, "Oh, I bought this item for 50K because gold is so easy to come by..." and similar comments. Huh? How the heck do they have 50K to just throw around?

My only guess is that some "tanks" might adventure alone (no henchies) and thus keep all the drops, which I can't do. Is that all there is? What am I missing?

gold used to be much much easier to come by. Check out the farming forums, Solo Eles can farm just about everything a tank can if not more.

Typically people farm green weapons (as opposed to Purple, Blue, or Gold) and sell them to players. Gold weapons can also have some important weapon mods that you could sell for a good price. There's also farming of Globs of Ectoplasm which are sort of a secondary currency, as each glob sells for a pretty high price at the Rare Material Trader.

The fact that you only have Prophecies says a lot, too. In Prophecies, completing a quest typically gives you like, skills, 500 experience and a weapon or two. In Factions, you can get like 3000 experience per quest and 100-250 gold. Also, beating missions in Factions gives large monetary rewards since it has a three tiered system instead of Prophecies' mission+bonus system.
Nightfall's about the same, but I haven't gotten to buying it yet so I can't give any examples. =P

i may be wrong in this but i think you may be loosing money by salvaging all your items. unless it says "highly salvageable" when you identify it, it is usually worth more money as is to the merchant.

1) Dont salvage everything you have, unless you know what it will salvage for, or if the item says HIGHLY SALVAGEABLE after you identify it.

2) If you buy new armour everytime you arrive in a new city or town, then you are bleeding money. Most people buy armour in Lions Arch, then get the maximum armour in Droknars forge.

Other people also search for collector armour int he desert (as it is max as well) and hardly costs anything but your time. And doing this also means you are farming as well.

3) Farm in high volatile areas. Some people farm Hydras, some people farm in the Ring of Fire areas, some int he Temple of Ages (in the Underworld, or Fissure of Woe), and some in the Shiverpeaks in Sorrows Furnace.

4) Eles have skill sets that allow them to farm alone like tanks. You just need to come up with a unique build or you can find someone who can share with you a nice farming build for you to use.

Good luck and have fun.

if something says highly salvageable us an exper salvage kit on it to get the rare material. For the most part sale blues/purples to merchants or other players if you think they are truely wanted...although you want sale a purple/blue to another in general.....once you get to high lvl mobs (+20) id all items white/blue/purple and sale to merchant unless you are quite sure you can use it...sale it to another....or salvage something off of it that has a higher value than the item as it is. As many people have said don't rush off to buy the next available armor....play in the area you are in and see if your armor is good enough for it or if you really need that next set. Set some goals for yourself and achieve them....like I will not buy anything until I have 20k gold in the bank....and DON'T buy anything until you do!!! Money is hard to come by in GW especially as a "casual" player unless you find that rare drop that is worth a ton or you learn to solo bosses for greens or you become a power trader then you will just have to get used to the idea of being middle class or even possible lower class. its not a big deal...if you are rich or poor....its your attitude in the game.

After playing for 3700 hours i can tell u this:

Get yourself a job. Thats how you make money.

Not an option? Money comes from selling rare things to ppl, not from picking up everything on the ground.

After playing for over 4000 hours I can tell you this:

That is not true. I have plenty of money almost all of it from picking up everything on the ground. Selling items to other people is almost a full time job if you are trying to get top dollar for your goods. If you are willing to sale for below the actual value you can usually make a deal pretty quick though.

Personally I find that the more time I spend trying to sale something in town is the more money I lose because I could be out "picking up everything on the ground".

That is so true...

Unless you are selling something actually worth big money, you usually just waste your time.

building cash does take time initially, I remember been in the same predicament you are, and then I had a couple of lucky rune drops back in the day when monk and warrior absorbtion runes were still worth something, made me the happiest toon alive $$

Merch everything that's non-max.
Merch (almost) all white, blue and purple items.
Merch gold items that won't be worth much (less than 5k as a beginner).

Trying to sell something for 300g when you can sell it to merch for 100g and move on to farm more is a waste of time. People won't buy it, and you're better off exploring and killing stuff.

Yep, it's easy to spiral into bankruptcy if you spend willy nilly, but in reality there's very little you actually need to spend money on - ID/Salvage kits are about it. Even keys will very rarely turn a profit, unless you're willing to spend the time selling to players , which is by no means required.

I've saved up about 350k in 4 months of playing with hardly any of that coming from player trading.

So as has been said before...

sell rather than salvage
don't buy armor in every town, or go for collectors armor (can be a pain farming for collectibles but works out much much cheaper)
once you get to droknar's forge you can get max armor so you shouldn't have to buy any more, unless you want to get prestige armor
check the wiki for your profession, eg. http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Element...lector_weapons and get collectors weapons. Especially if you later get Nightfall and have to outfit your heroes you'll want to get collectors weapons as spending money and materials at a crafter can cost you upwards of 6k a go.

Thanks for all the good tips everyone. I never really knew much about farming and figured it was for the tank types. I spent some time reading the links above and found that a Elem can do it too.

The reason I started salvaging everything (and how come there's not a title for that?) is because I read some tips for newbs before playing, and it was reccomended to do so. The basic premise behind it (and it is fairly sound if you are still doing the missions, like I am) is that by breaking down everything into components, you will almost never fill up your backpack slots, and thus you never have to leave anything on the ground, or sacrifice one item to pickup another. So yeah, sometimes I walk into town with 180 planks of wood, and 300 iron ingots, etc., but I can then sell ALL that stuff.

I just made it (right before I posted the original question) to Droks, and now have max armor, so that's a non-issue for me now. Although I read something about "infused armor" and I'm still not sure what that is or if it applies to me, but that's another discussion.

I've tried selling stuff to other players, and so far, haven't sold a thing. I stood there in the square with everyone else hawking wares, and basically wasted a few hours of my time and ended up selling the stuff to merchants anyway. I have a sale on the "sell" forum here too, but I've gotten one "bite", and no one is even bidding on the things like superiour runes that I thought would be of interest. Again, selling them to a merchant is probably better in the end, as right now they are just taking up valuable storage space.

I've never yet seen a green item - is that a post prophicies thing?

If you have raw materials check what the traders will give for the item before selling it to the merchant. Merchants always buy for 3 gold each (Traders can give a bit more for some items but they are sold in multiples of 10 for normal and by the pc on rare)

Green Weapons - Have you made it to the War Camp? All bosses in the forge and outside of it have a chance to drop one. Go to www.guildwiki.com and look under Green Weapons for Prophesies it will tell you who, what, and where they are.

and just to answer your question about infused armor....don't worry about that. It's not another set of armor that you'll need to buy. Basically, you just need to talk to the Seer in the Iron Mines mission. Infusion is a process that just super-treats your existing armor with a nice Anti-Mursaat bonus.

If your seriouse about making money you have to dedicate your gaming time to just making money.

The most profitable farming methods are:
Solo underworld for ectos i saved up 350k in afew weeks.

Trading items over 100k.

When items go over 100k your selling to people with alot of money and probably have been hunting for this item for weeks and weeks saving every penny as they search. When your items worth 200k offer it for 230k and they still wont think twice about buying it unless they are a trader. The higher you go the higher your profits.

Im sure StueyG and Jackstah will know somthing about this kind of trading

You do not really start making money until around the southern shiverpeaks - where you are at. For farming you will need a few of the elites you can get in that area.

You also need to start looking for a farming build - say for instance a 55 monk or 55 necro. After you first go or so through the game the second time goes *much* faster as you know what you are doing - you will also have money for getting runs to just the spots you need to make your farmer. Go check out the farming section for builds and areas - I know for a fact you can farm hard mode Hulking Stone Elementals for OK money with both a 55 necro and 55 monk.
